Oral Care

Cleaning:

The best way to clean an oral piercing is with either an alcohol free mouth wash such as Biotene or a sea salt mixture of 4 tsp of non-iodized sea salt in 1 gallon distilled water, stronger is not better. You should rinse your mouth 4-5 times a day after eating smoking and at bed time.  If your tongue turns colors it means you are over cleaning.

Lip-Labret-Monroe:
These piercing’s must also be cleaned on the outside and the easiest thing to do is soak the piercing in the same sea salt mixture for a few minutes 2-3 times a day. If you are having a hard time soaking the piercing try using saturated gauze or cotton balls.

What to expect:
Your piercing will swell for 3-7 days depending on how well you care for it and if you smoke.  During this time try to eat soft foods. To reduce the swelling keep the area cold, take an anti-inflammatory according to the packages instructions, sleep with your head elevated and don’t play with the piercing.

What to avoid:
  • Playing with the jewelry
  • Talking too much
  • Using and alcoholic mouth wash
  • Engaging in oral sexual contact during healing.  This includes kissing
  • Smoking for as long as possible
  • .Aspirin, alcohol or large amount of caffeine.
What else can I do?
Go buy yourself a new toothbrush and brush your teeth and tongue after meals.  Once healed brush the jewelry to avoid a build up of plaque.  It is also a good idea to eat a healthy diet or take a multivitamin.  Once the swelling has gone down it is very important to RETURN to downsize the jewelry.

And remember there is no such thing as a stupid question.
